Developmental Education

Development-focused strategies to support learning, behaviour, and participation.

Developmental education uses a strengths-based, development-focused approach to help individuals build the skills they need for everyday learning and engagement. Support is tailored to the person’s current stage of development and the environments they move through (home, school, community), with strategies that make tasks clearer, routines more predictable, and expectations achievable.

Interventions may include scaffolding new skills step-by-step, teaching self-regulation and social skills, and adjusting the setting to reduce barriers to participation. The aim is to improve learning and behaviour in practical, measurable ways—so the person can take part more confidently in activities, relationships, and daily routines, with supports that can be used consistently by families and other key people.
